Stop Spamming My Business Blog!

The original meaning of "Spam" was a canned meat by Hormel. I never liked it. Then, Monty Python did a skit in which they mentioned Spam several times. As a result of this skit, Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE) became known as "Spam". Then the meaning was expanded to include off-topic posts to newsgroups and forums. I am now including in "Spam" any post to my comments sections of my blogs that are off-topic or include more than 5 links to sites not related to the topic of my blog. Fortunately, most of the people posting comments to my business blog have not posted links to sites selling Viagra, pornography or gambling. Still, I'm bothered by people making posts that go something like this

Hi. I saw your blog and found it interesting even though it is not exactly what I was looking for. I was looking for information on red Fords and your blog is about green Chevy's. Please see my site at www.someredfordsite.com.

ONE post like this may be OK, but these people are making up to ten nearly identical posts like this, often on the same page! THAT is definitely Spam! So, to combat Spam I have enabled a word verification feature on all of my blogs. Spam scripts cannot read the word verification and thus cannot make posts to my blogs. Humans wanting to make comments on my blog will have to pass the verification test before they can make posts. Then, as an added precaution, I have to approve all comments before they get posted to my blog. THAT should stop the spam posts.

Now, what do I do about the Spam posts that are already on my blog? I am now going to go through my prior posts and delete as many of these as I can. IF Spam posts continue to be a problem I will simply disable the comments feature of my blogs. I would like for people to post relevant comments to my blogs and get discussions going about certain topics that may be of interest to my readers. Please work with me on this!
